I bought the piccolo xs first and realised that the pod adapter I had bought didn’t work in it. So I bought this one instead without really reading up on it. I have to say I am quite impressed with the machine itself. With the adapter I can also have nespresso pods as well as the gusto pods. The hot chocolate gusto pods make very small sizes. Maybe I’m just greedy but I like more that quarter of a mug when it comes to hot chocolate.

I am sensitive to dairy milk so can only have a small amount per day, so I buy coffee only pods, hence the want of the nespresso pod adapter. So I usually use the machine for a lungo sized coffee espresso whether gusto or costa compatible or nesspresso pods and then heat and froth almond milk in a milk frother machine. Works well that way. I did make someone a dulce gusto cappuccino using both the coffee and milk pods exactly as intructed on the pods. They said it was very sweet and the coffee was almost non existant. So I think I will avoid those pods and just use stronger pods. You can buy the milks loose. There isn’t really much cleaning when it comes to the machine itself. I do find it better than the tassimo it replaced. Some ways it is better are; variety of pods I can use (with adapter and standard pod trays). The coffee comes straight from the pod to the cup whereas the tassimo it goes through a spout pourer after the pod. That builds up with coffee dirt and the coffee starts to taste bitter the older the machine gets. As the gusto comes straight from the bottom of the pod you get the full flavour. Another way it is better than tassimo in my opinion is that it is more adjustible. With the tassimo I put a pod in and it chose the size. Even though the machine I had allowed you to set 4 preferences and change size and temperatures it didn’t really make much difference. If I selected it to be stronger it didn’t actually taste stronger, it just tasted more bitter. If I selected hotter I could still drink it straight away, so wasn’t all that different from normal heat. If I selected larger water level it controlled how much extra water and ruined the drink because it was too watery. If you wanted you could leave you finder on the button and release it at the level you want but it would keep running for a while after and it wouldn’t be hot water anymore, so cooked the drink down. So yes it could be adjusted minimally. The gusto seems to be better controlled as you can manually flip the switch to off at any time. If you want extra liquid you just flip the switch to on and it gives you hot water, then when you turn that off it doesn’t first give cold water like the tassimo. I think I fail to explain myself well there. In short, the drinks are hotter when you adjust them away from the pod instructions with the gusto machine. Another possitive is the footprint taken up on the kitchen side. When put where my tassimo was it looks so tiny. It takes up far less width and depth space. It is also a bit shorter as I have room between the top of the machine and the cupboard above the worktop counter. The tassimo was almost touching it and could hardly open the pod door. Not a problem with the gusto as there is plenty of room. So far the only negative is sone of the drink sizes without the ability to make them bigger without watering them down into a tasteless discoloured water.

    Einfaches Handling

My wife will not touch coffee, so just wanted a small machine for myself.
This replaced an identical machine that had ‘died’ after many years.

I bought this after much deliberation when my old model broke. I looked at some alternative Nescafe Dulce machines, including the Piccolo, which is much cheaper. Unfortunately the cheaper ones are also manual, which means you have to judge when to stop the water flow, which means living with inconsistency (unless you have a really good eye) and also it’s a bit inconvenient having to stay by the machine until your coffee is ready.

I went for this one, since it seemed to deliver a really nice balance between functionality and price (the drawback is that it has a small water tank (0.8 litres)). I haven’t found this to be a bother at all. I use this in my office and refill from my water bottle so it’s really no inconvenience at all – and you get two cup fulls of coffee (at six bar) before having to re-fill, so 0.8l is easily enough for single person use. Given its nice size and other positive features, I’d even recommend it for a domestic setting with multiple people using it, even weighed against having to refill the tank a bit more often than you would with one of the alternative (pricier) models.

The machine looks really nice, and is compact. The set up was super easy (you’re basically just running a tank full of water through once, whilst using an insert) and then you’re good to go. I was so glad I went with an automatic when I saw the bars – they light up lovely. The machine also operates reasonably quietly which I was pleased about (although not when it’s running low on water, but I suppose that’s a good warning system really).

The machine warms up for use really quickly, and there’s no stiffness with the pod holder. I’d absolutely recommend this machine.

simple to use, compact and works well, wipe clean on the outside, however, cleaning the water tank isnt so easy, the opening is very small, so I never leave water in it, as water can leave a small residue behind if left standing. my only other small critisism is that pulling the water tank out to refil is tricky, its a small grip in the tank that you push down/pull and i find it tricky to grip it. I get round it by sliding my nail between the maching and water tank and push down with my left hand and pull with the right. hope this helps. other wise im very happy with the machine, it suits my needs.
