This phone is great in that it meets a specific purpose, so will not be for everyone.

    Positives
    Easy calling to 3 numbers
Easy request for assistance and when activated the phone goes onto loudspeaker and takes over ringing your 3 responders in order and texting all.3 with location and an alert assistance has been requested
Can be run with a reasonably minimal SIM package
Has option for a second SIM too.
Responders can download the app and activate it to the phone and then can see battery life left, location of the phone, and change some basic settings remotely like volume, screen brightness
Messages can be received by the phone but not sent

    Disadvantages
It’s takes time and thought to set up. Once done though, it’s done and the settings are highly unlikely be changed in error.
The positives listed above could be considered negatives for people who need more functionality
Because the phone book only has 3 numbers if anyone else calls in the owner doesn’t know who is ringing so cannot choose to answer friends and not answer scams

I wish I had read the negative reviews here before buying this Doro phone for my elderly mother.

It is time consuming and difficult to set up. I say that as someone with extensive experience of using and configuring mobile phones and other digital devices, over many years.

The phone comes with a large sheet of paper printed on both sides described as “Quick Start Guide” (see photos). This refers you to a full manual online!

Having completed the set up I found that the SIM provider’s voicemail would prevent the Doro’s Auto Answer feature from operating (or so I thought). So I had to remove the SIM card and put it in another unlocked phone in order to switch off voicemail using the appropriate code (there’s no keypad on the Doro so you can’t enter any numbers). There’s not much point in allowing your network provider’s voicemail to operate with the Doro, because the elderly user will not be able to pick up voicemail messages unless you dedicate one of the 3 allowed numbers to calling Voicemail. And even then there would be no way of entering voicemail menu option numbers (e.g. to delete messages or hear messages again).

Once voicemail was disabled the Auto Answer didn’t work anyway!

Once in the hands of the intended elderly user, system messages will be displayed on the screen and these have to be navigated using the small button which comprises “Four-way navigation keys / OK button”. The product photo shows just how small the four keys around the OK button are.

The “Menu button” (also small – the oblong button with 3 dots) has to be “long pressed” (what does that mean?) to unlock the screen, which locks itself frequently regardless of your settings.

System messages – e.g. missed calls, and totally unnecessary messages concerning non-existent data usage – have to be cleared using the tiny navigation keys.

My elderly mother thankfully does not have dementia but has limited hand dexterity and has given up trying to use this phone. Unfortunately I did not get around to opening the Doro package for many weeks, so am too late to return through Amazon, otherwise I certainly would.

To anyone considering buying this Doro phone, I strongly recommend you first:

    1. read the detailed negative reviews on here;

    2. read the full online manual; and

    3. look at the product photo and consider carefully whether the intended user will be able to use the small navigation keys around the OK button.

It’s easy to set up, great little phone, the only thing I would say was wrong with it, is you can only ever contact the three people you have input as A,B & C. My mother is 80 and in a nursing home, she has only had one other phone and I thought you would just press A,B or C and the phone would automatically dial that person, what you have to do to make it easy is press A,B or C and then press the green button and the call goes through, or if you are mobile savvy you can place the call following the on screen instructions. I did think it was expensive for what it is but gives me piece of mind.
Sound quality is good. I didn’t bother setting up SoS.

These phones are fabulous in their simplicity of use and perfect for dementia users BUT setting them up is definitely not easy….even when done by young techy person. The set up is very different so you need to be sure it’s all done before it’s suitable for anyone very elderly or with dementia.
Clarity and ease of answering and dialing is good.

Gemakkelijk te gebruiken, zeker voor senioren.
Eenvoudige installatie, uitgebreid met mogelijkheid om 4 veel gebruikte verbindingen te programmeren.
    Plus een SOS toets.
    Een aanrader.

To sum up this phone is fairly simple to use for the user but it’s not idiot proof for example the user could make errors that may result in them accidentally calling the emergency services. However I would say that this phone is a fantastic concept and is a great idea for someone with mild dementia symptoms or similar and gives the family peace of mind when the user is out and about with the ability to see where they are.

The biggest problem is that the set-up of this phone is extremely complicated and is best done by a young technology savvy person who has a lot of patience it took me a whole evening to set up the phone…
It’s also worth noting that the phone can only call 3 people there is no phonebook of contacts and whilst It can receive text messages it cannot send them the idea being to keep the phone as simple as possible.

At present this is the only cellular phone that has been designed for a user with dementia, it’s great concept but it definitely needs some work and more development. For the time being the phone will do the job if you can get past the setup process.

I would argue that the build quality of the phone feels cheap when compared to the build quality of other phones of its price range, it looks and feels similar to some of the budget priced phones from the same manufacturer; however this must be weighed up with the manufacturers claim that it is built to be shockproof and apparently has the claimed advantage of being able to resist both being dropped and bring deliberately thrown, I have not put this to the test but it is easy to imagine that a smartphone type build and screen could more easily break.

Gute Idee.
