This is the worst vacuum cleaner I have ever had!!! Having 5 kids and a dog I realise I am asking quite a lot of any vacuum cleaner I buy however one that can actually suck up crumbs would be good.
The only positive thing I can say is that it is reasonably good as lifting pet hairs from the middle of the hardwood floor. If however the hairs have clumped it can’t manage, anything round the skirtings or under edge of the sofa. . . forget it! It can’t manage crumbs or fluff, has no impact whatsoever on carpet and I usually find myself having to sweep floors after I’ve hoovered anyway.
In addition the hose and attachments are awkward and difficult to use, (although, I will admit, have slightly better suction than the main hoover) and using them usually causes the whole dyson to topple. I have also found that the flex is not very long. With my last vacuum cleaner (a vax) I could reach round the whole of my, not particularly large, house whilst plugged into 1 socket. With the dyson I have to change socket 3 times.
My last complaint is that this useless hunk of plastic was not cheap!!!! How have Dyson managed to get away with selling crap products at such an exorbitant price? I will not be buying another one EVER and am very hacked off that I saved up to buy this one in the first place. As will surprise nobody after this rant I would definitely NOT recommend the Dyson dc40 and in my humble opinion it is lucky to be getting 1 star.

I have been using this model for a couple of months now. The suction power is second to none. It suctions up the most minute particles. The floor is always left spotlessly clean. I am always amazed at the amount of dust it suctions up even though I regularly vacuum the floors. The bagless device for expelling the dust into the bin is pretty nifty.
Although the rollerball is somewhat easy to manoeuvre over large areas, I find using the wand to get into crevices is a bit of a pain. I find I have to battle with the wand and hose to get it into the position I require. This is because the concertina hose strongly fights to stay in its’ concertina form. As the hose is pulling against me to get back into its static position all the time, I find it a nightmare to do any vacuum cleaning which involves the hose and wand e.g. stairs and window ledges, edges, skirting board, under furniture, and crevices. I have no mobility or strength issues however, I debated long and hard about whether to get the lightweight model or the full model, as I was aware that I would have to lug the cleaner up and down the stairs. I say the lightweight model is the way to go. It is just about the right weight without being too heavy, cumbersome or bulky. Also I have noticed that for some unknown reason the transition between shifting the suction from the upright cleaner to the hose has become stiffer after only a couple of months of use. I wouldn’t expect this given the price of the cleaner.
All in all it is a great cleaner but it is a little way off being perfect.
UPDATE JAN 2013
Having only had the vacuum cleaner for only 3 months it started to make some very loud noises and started to smell like burning. The engineer came out and said the motor needed replacing!!! He did say it was rare but I am sure they say that to everyone. Having just used the vac for light day to day cleaning I would not expect it to fail so early on in its life. I will see how it performs in the future.

I have avoided the Dyson purchase for so long mainly due to the garish colours of the range and the fact the hype about a product is usually completely innacurate and continued to use my 38 year old Electrolux 500.
I have 5 upright cleaners now (gathering dust)as i keep purchasing a replacement for the Electrolux only to be dissapointed by how useless they are – or indeed far too heavy to carry upstairs.
The DC40 is described as a lightweight – and whilst its just a tad heavier than the Electrolux it truly is a lightweight when compared to the other cleaners i have.
I really am impressed with the DC40 and indeed the Electrolux is no longer used, The construction is a bit flimsy and i doubt it will last anything like the Electrolux but its a super cleaner, easy to use and the head gets into all the awkward places, emptying is brilliant, just press a button and all the collected dust falls out, no foot pedal to release the handle – just pull it down – and start hoovering.
I really like this cleaner, good performance, easy to move about, light, looks quite good, some great features, Price – a tad dear at over £300 and the cable supplied should be at least 3 more metres longer as i find i have to keep moving sockets – which is annoying, however, I will extend the cable myself even if that does invalidate the warranty.
