7 reviews for Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) (GPS, 40mm) Smart watch – Starlight Aluminium Case with Starlight Sport Band – Regular. Fitness & Sleep Tracker, Crash Detection, Heart Rate…

  1. Rated 5 out of 5

    Tele-Addict

As someone who wanted to dip my toes into the Apple Watch ecosystem without breaking the bank, the Apple Watch SE (2nd Generation) GPS model seemed like the perfect entry point. I specifically chose the 44mm size in black, and I’m incredibly pleased with that decision. I’ve been wearing it daily for several weeks now, and I can confidently say it’s more than just an “entry-level” device; it’s a fantastic, feature-packed smartwatch that genuinely enhances my daily life. It fully deserves its five-star rating!

    Positives:
    * Exceptional Value for Money: This is undoubtedly the SE’s biggest selling point. You get the core Apple Watch experience – notifications, fitness tracking, Apple Pay, communication – at a significantly more approachable price point than the flagship Series models. It feels like you’re getting 90% of the functionality for much less.
    * Sleek Black Design & Perfect 44mm Fit: The black finish is incredibly versatile and looks sharp with any outfit, from casual to more formal. The 44mm size is, for me, the ideal balance – large enough to comfortably view notifications and interact with apps, but not overly bulky on my wrist. The fit is excellent; with the included band, it sits securely and comfortably, even during workouts, without feeling loose or restrictive.
    * Seamless Apple Ecosystem Integration: As an iPhone user, the setup was effortless, and the watch instantly felt like an extension of my phone. Notifications are perfectly synced, calls come through clearly, and controlling music from my wrist is incredibly convenient. It just works as you’d expect from Apple.
    * Robust Fitness and Health Tracking: This watch has genuinely motivated me to be more active. The Activity rings are surprisingly addictive, and the heart rate monitoring, step counting, and comprehensive workout tracking (for walks, runs, swims, etc.) are accurate and insightful. The GPS is brilliant for outdoor activities, letting me leave my phone behind while still tracking my route and distance.
    * Crucial Safety Features: The inclusion of Fall Detection and, notably, Crash Detection in this generation of the SE provides immense peace of mind. Knowing that my watch can automatically call for help in an emergency is a huge selling point for personal safety.
    * Smooth Performance: The S8 SiP (System in Package) chip makes the SE surprisingly zippy. Apps open quickly, scrolling is fluid, and there’s no noticeable lag during daily interactions. It never feels sluggish.
    * Durable & Water Resistant: I wear it everywhere, including in the shower and pool. The water resistance is excellent, and the Ion-X front glass feels robust enough for everyday bumps and knocks.

    Negatives:
    * No Always-On Display: This is probably the biggest missing feature compared to the Series 9/Ultra. You have to raise your wrist to see the time or notifications. While it saves battery, it’s something you notice if you’ve ever used a watch with an AOD or just prefer glancing at your wrist.
    * Lacks Advanced Health Sensors: If you’re looking for features like ECG (electrocardiogram) for irregular heart rhythm detection or Blood Oxygen tracking, you’ll need to step up to a more expensive Series model. The SE provides core heart health monitoring, but not these more advanced diagnostics.
    * Daily Charging: Like most Apple Watches, the SE typically requires charging every night. You won’t get multiple days of battery life, so it’s a routine you need to get used to.
    * Slightly Thicker Bezels: Compared to the newer Series models, the bezels around the screen are slightly more noticeable. It’s purely an aesthetic point and doesn’t impact usability, but it’s there.
    Conclusion:
For anyone looking to experience the full benefits of an Apple Watch without the premium price tag of the flagship models, the Apple Watch SE (2nd Generation) GPS in the 44mm black variant is an absolute champion. It delivers all the essential smartwatch features, excellent fitness tracking, critical safety functions, and seamless integration with your iPhone, all in a stylish and comfortable package. While it skips the Always-On display and advanced health sensors, these are minor concessions for the incredible value it offers. If you want a reliable, smart, and safe companion on your wrist that looks great and fits perfectly, look no further. This is the smartwatch sweet spot!

The Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) in its Starlight Aluminium Case paired with the Starlight Sport Band is a testament to Apple’s commitment to blending functionality with style. The watch’s aesthetic is both sleek and modern, with the Starlight color giving it a unique and sophisticated touch that can easily transition from a workout session to a night out.

Performance-wise, the 2nd generation SE doesn’t disappoint. It offers a smooth user experience, with apps launching quickly and the touch response being as intuitive as one would expect from an Apple product. The GPS feature is accurate and reliable, making it a great companion for outdoor activities and workouts. The fitness tracking capabilities are commendable, offering a wide range of metrics that cater to both casual users and fitness enthusiasts.

The display is bright and clear, making it easy to read even in direct sunlight. The raise-to-wake feature is quite responsive, and the haptic feedback provides a tactile experience that feels premium. The integration with the iPhone is seamless, and the ability to receive notifications, answer calls, and even respond to messages directly from the watch is incredibly convenient.

However, the Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) is not without its shortcomings. While it offers a plethora of features, it lacks the always-on display, which is a feature present in some of the higher-end models. This means you’ll need to raise your wrist or tap the screen to see the time or check notifications. Additionally, while the battery life is decent, lasting a full day on moderate use, it might require nightly charging for those who use it extensively throughout the day.

The Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) is a solid mid-range offering from Apple. It encapsulates most of the essential features that users have come to love about the Apple Watch series, all while being presented in a stylish Starlight Aluminium Case. While it might not have all the bells and whistles of its pricier counterparts, it offers great value for its price point and is a worthy consideration for those looking to enter the Apple Watch ecosystem or upgrade from an older model.

Bought in August 2022, still wearing and using it March 2025. It’s got a couple of scratches on it now, but the battery life is still great. Just what you expect from Apple, works well with the apple eco-system, talks to my phone/laptop and great product overall!

Great little smart watch. Bought it 2 years ago and it is still working great. The battery could be a little better but lasts at least 1 day.

Great buy, very clear not laggy, sits nice on the wrist, easy to setup and connect to your iPhone but the battery life isn’t ideal it gets really annoying having to plug in every night but overall good purchase

I am comfortable with Apple watches having owned a series 3 and now series 8.
I purchased this for my wife as her smart watch has just broken and as she doesn’t like the larger sized watch screen the 40mm SE is just right for her.
Easy to set up aided by her phone and shares many of the latest features the more expensive versions has.
Pretty good value for a premium brand.
This model doesn’t share the always on screen and the battery life doesn’t seem that great.
My five year old series 3 still lasts more than a day, this one requires a recharge every day.
My wife isn’t keen on the strap design ( ignore my photo I am aware the strap is incorrectly fitted ).
A number of new watch faces bring the watch up to date and there is a vast app catalogue to chose from.
Lots of fitness and sleep options.
    Measure your heart rate.
Setting up a card to Pay using Apple Pay is a synch.
    Nice colour option too.
