Spud –
I was so excited to order this Item. I currently own a NUC8i7HV (GH) an so know the power that a NUC can provide in a small box.
I was slightly disappointed with the look when comparing it to intel’s nucs (with the skull) but the ROG branding is still quite good but just not as good in my opinion.
Fault 1: After unboxing, I connected my monitors and began setup – within seconds I could here a clicking on the unit that occurred every time the fans started up – this sounded exactly like a mechanical hard drive when the head move around to read from sectors.
Fault 2: Watching the voltage in the UEFI Bios, the voltage was incredibly unstable on the ram and was moving up and down at rates I have never seen (I am a system builder with over 30 years experience so know what to expect here).
Fault 3: The temperature sensor for the CPU would also jump erratically (whilst in UEFI Bios so not under any stress at all) from 60 – 80 degrees and then back down to 60.
Fault 4: This unit is supposed to support Thunderbolt to display port but neither of my existing leads (that work in my current nuc) worked – or were even detected in this unit.
I have returned my item and I could order a replacement but after this experience I’m not spending this kind of money on ASUS engineering as it is not anywhere near as good as Intel’s was.
That said – if you are looking to buy this and can accept that this may have just been and isolated faulty unit then it may be worth risking your hard earned cash. So, here’s some things that may help you to decide:
Size:
The size of this unit is not significantly smaller that a XBOX series s.
EUFI Bios:
Not the worst interface I have seen but not far off it. Not as much control as you would expect with a high budget machine.
Performance:
Unable to properly assess due to faults listed above. But on paper would be a beast of a machine.
