I’ve had this around 5 years and it’s been a good little hover I find the suction struggles sometimes but always returns after a deep clean, it’s very light and easy to manoeuvre. I’ve had to replace the extending tube 4 times I think dyson needs to work on the hose they dont last long, recently the bristle head snapped off another thing I found annoying is the bristle bar has red bristles and had black bristles when I bought it, but after about 3 uses those black bristles where gone like a pair of overused eyelashes!! Ping gone!!!!.

I truly regret having purchased this product. To keep it somewhat simple here is a pro and con list according to my experience:
Pros:
1. Does a fine job of living up to the Dyson reputation for suction power.
2. VERY compact so it’s easy to store away.
Cons:
1. Astronomical cost.
2. You will have to spend a lot more to get attachment that should have been included.
3. Will not be able to vacuum under bed unless it is propped by stilts. (The Dyson attachment I had to buy only works semi adequitely.)
4. The hose is absurdly short. You won’t be able to reach the ceiling to get cobwebs unless if you are able to hoist the the vacuum over head with one hand while vacuuming with the other hand. The other option is to spend a lot of extra time and effort to undo the hose then attach a clumsily designed extension hose. The hose winds and unwinds so in other words, the attachment spins as it expands. Whichs makes for a very difficult process for what should be simple, specially at this huge price tag (why didn’t they make the hose longer to begin with?!?)
5. Vacuum doesn’t move in a straight smooth motion. You will need to exert extra grip and tension to keep moving straight. Sounds strange but true.
Be careful when emptying the dust canister. The dust gets stuck and when you shake to facilitate the drop, the dust plumes and goes straight up your nose. I got from the first time first time so now I use a dust mask and as gently as possible I spin in stead of shake the canister.
Amazon was very helpful and did what they could. But I didn’t realize that there was a one month refund cut off. That was my own mistake and should have checked. I was told I need to deal with Dyson directly which was a whole different type ordeal. Half of the people I tried to talk to seemed as if they were resentful to be at work were unbelievably rude then the other half which were calling to apologize to me. Seriously, it happened a few times. I tried to get them to do an even trade for an older model. They made me spin my wheels and had to drive 30 miles to an authorized repair center to look at it for no reason. In the end they told me they were going to send me a longer hose which they never did.
Overall, there are much better ways to invest your money. I’m a big Amazon fan and they did not do anything wrong and tried to help best they could, but for a purchase like this, I should gone with Costco.
Update: Ironically, the day after writing up this review and months of waiting the hose finally came. But it’s only an extension and to go through bunch of steps to use and it also extends by uncurling and therefore spinning your attachments as you extend. I waited months to really take my time to give a fair review but, unfortunately, I get more annoyed the more I use this product. If you’re a die-hard Dyson fan, I would strongly recommend the cheaper and better dc41 for upright.

ended up sending it back the next day and purchased the Cinetic Big Ball Animal model but here is my review.
I ordered the Dyson DC50 Animal ball. I had a Dyson DC25 for nearly a decade that I used to vacuum the whole house right before I used the new DC50 I received because I saw someone else also mentioned doing this. I was shocked at how much dust, dirt and dog hair the DC50 was able to be sucked up!
The vacuum for it’s compact size has the power of 10 hoover vacuums in the same compact catagory. There is no point in buying a $150-200 vacuum that only works good for a year and still doesn’t do the job of a Dyson. My Dyson DC25 Animal lasted a very long time and never needed maintenance.
Even though it did an amazing job of sucking up dirt that I had no idea was even in m carpet, there were a few problems with the DC50 though.
1) The compact vacuum could not pick up pieces of dog food on the tile kitchen floor.
2) The compact vacuum’s roller bar would stop spinning on some of my carpeted floors.
3) The hose was so short it was hard to use on the stairs.
4) THE BIGGEST PROBLEM: The handle had a neck that was a super thin piece of plastic. It was like they took a PVC pipe, bored it out to about .5″ thick then cut it in half and used it for the neck that connected to the body. I thought it was going to break at any given time.
Overall this is a great vacuum for someone with animals with more hard floors than carpet that lives in a small condo or apartment. If you have taller carpet, thicker rugs and stairs this vacuum is not the right model for you and you should purchase the Cinetic Big Ball Animal. I replaced the DC50 with the Cinetic Big Ball Animal vacuum and it blew my mind away how much more dirt it was able to suck up after I had vacuumed the whole house with the DC50 just 3 days prior.

UPDATE: Well, it turns out I was wrong. I realized just a few moments ago that the brush comes like that because of parts in the vacuum head… basically, the brush is not worn out, the vacuum is totally fine! I’m changing the title of this review, deleting my pics and cancelling my return… again! … 5 stars!
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
When this vaccuum arrived I looked at the size of the box and thought instantly, this is way to small. I immediately went to my computer and requested a return/refund. Then I purchased one of the other full size models just minutes after starting the return process. I hadnt even tried this vacuum, but my mind was already made up. Shipping on the other vacuum was going to take 5 days. I stood there looking at my carpet which was covered in dog hair shed from 3 Samoyeds and bits of things my new puppy had chewed up and scattered everywhere.
Even though i had no intention of keeping the shrimpy little Dyson, I really needed to vacuum my apartment. Reluctantly I opened it up and had a little laugh. The size of the canister was tiny, the hose was narrow and short… everything about it just felt wrong.
Then I plugged it in, turned it on and I was blown away. It might be a small vacuum but baby it packs a punch! I purchased a DC25 7 years ago and I have never had an issue with it. (I dont currently have it with me, so that is why i bought this compact model) anyhow, I thought my old Dyson was a great vacuum, little did I know how far they’ve come in their design and efficiency.
On first glance this compact model looks cheap. However, once you’re vacuuming, it becomes apparent that it is an engineering masterpiece. It just might be the most amazing vacuum I’ve ever used.
So yeah, it was love at first dust mite… After using it for about 15 minutes I went back to my computer and cancelled my return. I was going to keep this cute vacuum. It was going to be mine forever because it was the most perfect vacuum in the world.
Over the last month, I have noticed a problem, and it’s a big problem. My dogs hair wraps around the brush head and the bristles are gradually falling out in clumps. This for me is deal breaker because replacing the brush every month is not something I want to do. Take a look at my video to see the damage that one months use has inflicted on the brush head.
With just a few days left to return it, I have decided to send it back to where it came from. My life will never be the same without this vacuum, but I know it just won’t work out in the end for either of us, so I have to let it go. If you love something let it go…. right?

I bought the DC50 refurbished. I had wanted a Dyson of my own since I’d seen how well my boyfriend’s DC07 performed. Then his sister bought a Dyson ball. I tried that and swore my next vacuum would be a Dyson. With my small apartment sized house I thought the DC50 compact Animal would be a great choice. It’s fantastic! I can get into areas and under furniture I never could before. It picks up far more than any vacuum I’ve ever had. Extremely powerful yet lightweight so I can carry it anywhere. After reading complaints about the handle being a pain to extend and retract correctly, I simply pulled it up, locked it in place and left it alone. The small dust bin does pack animal hair and debris in the top part of the bin, and you do have to disassemble the rollers frequently, but guess what? I had to disassemble the rollers in my previous vacuums as well. At least Dyson makes maintenance easier than any vacuum I’ve had yet. The feature I love most is one easy button push for carpet to bare floor right next to the power button on the handle. Ease of use at its finest! This would not be a good vacuum for a large home but it would easily do the job. 2 inches less coverage area and frequent dust bin emptying would be the only downside. 3 weeks of Dyson ownership and I swear I’m STILL pulling old dirt out of my living room carpet. Carpet seems softer and a bit brighter now. I would recommend this model in particular to those that have difficulty with large vacuums, and those with smaller homes. I would recommend any Dyson in the Animal line to anyone.

I just received my Dyson DC50 today and I was giddy to try it out. I live in a small 700 sq ft apartment with my long haired girlfriend and 35lb short haired dog; it appears after one use of the vacuum that they both shed like crazy. I knew my old Hoover Nano wasn’t cutting it in terms of getting all the hair out of my carpet and all the dog hair and dander started to make my apartment smell like a kennel. Thats what prompted my girlfriend and I to consider such a large purchase for a vacuum.
When I got it out of the box I put it together which was pretty straight forward. At this point I really began to notice how thin some of the plastic was on this thing. Particularly the grab handle on top of the filter,it has me concerned, I will see how it holds up. I did immediately register it for the 5 year warranty just incase it does break.
I decided to vacuum my bedroom first. This is where we all sleep( including the dog in his dog bed on the floor). I wanted to see how much better my Dyson was compared to my Hoover so I vacuumed first with the Hoover to see what it left behind. I unfortunately forgot to grab a picture of that before I dumped the canister. I did get a picture of the Dysons performance and I attached it to this review. I have to say so far I am really pleased with my purchase after one use. Seeing how much more the Dyson picked up and how much better my apartment smells already helps alleviate some of my worries about its flimsiness.
Here are my pros and cons.
Pros
-I got it on sale for $337.49 new so that was sweet.
-It picks up stuff my old vacuum left behind(a lot of stuff)
-Makes my apartment smell better
-easy to maneuver
-easy to clean the vacuum (dump it out and the filters)
Cons
– It’s flimsiness due to so much thin plastic
– The thing weighs so little that when you use the hose on it the vacuum flips over.
Not a con but due to its weight it doesn’t’ seem like it can really dig into thick carpet. Maybe rigging up some kind of 1lb or 2 lb weight on the front of it would help get more stuff up on thick carpets.
Overall I think this is a pretty good purchase for a higher end vacuum.
