Firstly I must congratulate Amazon. Not only was this the cheapest price I could find but I ordered the Dyson on a Thursday evening the week before Christmas and it was at my door Saturday morning. Well done Amazon for first class service as always. Secondly I must recommend the Dyson handheld. It does exactly what it says…..6 minutes of good hoovering, lightweight and very convenient. I know it only lasts 6 minutes but that’s plenty long enough for what it is intended for……great for hoovering up crumbs in the kitchen, dusting, around the edges of carpets, along the windowsills etc. You can quickly get it out to clear up when you don’t want to get a big hoover out. It could be used for the car but that depends on how dirty your car is. I have used it a lot already and when it runs out just plug in the charger, forget it for 3 hours and it’s ready to again. Highly recommended.

At last, a hand-held vacuum cleaner that works; the performance is good for the kind of quick clean-up jobs for which it is designed, and the battery life before recharging is at least as good as promised.
I do have some reservations. The ergonomics are frankly poor, as the handle is downright uncomfortable to hold even for the short operating time allowed. The ‘design’ effort that’s been put into the (in my view) aesthetically unpleasant shape and colours could have been diverted into designing a handle and switch that fit the hand well.
On my cleaner, the dust container began to jam shut after the first few times operating it, which is frustrating. The manual is substandard: indecipherable pictures rather than clearly worded instructions. And for this price, the manufacturer really should provide a spare battery and separate charger, as is the norm for cordless tools.
There is plenty of scope for the competition to produce a better cordless cleaner, and I hope they do.

Dyson: the epitome of doing exactly what it says on the tin. Having a Dyson upright cleaner and needing a cordless to deal with the interior of my car but having had past experience of the notorious “Dustbuster” I was wary. It was only Dyson’s reputation that swung me. Well worth the money, this little beast boasts above-average suction for the size of the motor and has good battery life, relatively speaking. The battery life is more than ample to thoroughly clean every nook and cranny of the interior of my car and still have a little left to fetch up the crumbs on my kitchen side before it needs recharging – and recharging is fast (again, relatively speaking). As well as the innovative standard tool cum retractable brush tool there is a long wand so that you really can reach every nook and cranny. As I said, I purchased primarily to use this in my car as it is awkward to get a mains vacuum to it but I’ve used this everywhere from the kitchen to cobwebs to taking out a moth annoyingly orbiting the light fitting. It is very versatile and always there when you need a vacuum but the job doesn’t justify fetching the mains cleaner out of the cupboard. As with other Dyson vacuums it is made of tough materials such as polycarbonate and features “push-click” assembly making it a doddle to empty (hold it over a bin, press the button) and take down for cleaning.
This is compact, light, efficient and features the usual Dyson 2-yr warranty and a self-resetting cut-out if you run it too long so that you don’t damage the tiny but powerful motor. Sure, Dyson machines cost a bit more than competing products but there is a very good reason for that and it’s well worth finding the extra few quid…

I like the look of this product and it does the job, but my wife hates it. It is certainly bulky and does not fit well into the kitchen, especially compared to our old Black and Decker DustBuster which hung on the wall and was always easily to hand. It is also relatively heavy and my wife finds it difficult to hold with one hand. We keep it in the utility and I use it to clean the inside of the car. It is very convenient to quickly clean up the floor under the table after the Grand children visit. The emptying mechanism is a joy to use after the other hand vacuums I have used.
I find I have to keep it on charge as the battery seems to run down quickly.
Although the DC30 is labelled as ‘Latest Generation’ my son tells me there is a newer model now. This maybe better but I have no experience of it.

Well, perhaps that’s a slight exaggeration. But compared with the handheld cleaners I’ve had in the past, it’s in a different league entirely. It has made hoovering the car a joy, and comes into its own when my friend Andrew eats pistachio nuts in the drawing room and leaves a little scatter of crumbs.
Because it sucks so effectively, the 6-minute extent of the charge doesn’t really matter: a minute or two freshens up the car. Emptying it is easy: hold it over the bin, push a button to release the little door, and give it a shake. Just remember to click the door firmly back in place, as another reviewer has commented.
It also looks satisfyingly like a death ray gun, which gives you a thrill every time you pull the trigger. I don’t get out much.
It *is* expensive (unless very kind friends buy it for your Christmas present – thanks Clare and Brian). But I’ve had a couple of cheaper handhelds, and they’ve ended up in the back of a cupboard because they didn’t suck, just gently breathed in, and were a nuisance to clean. You get what you pay for, I’m afraid.
