Dan Worsley –
When it worked, it worked well!
But after it became 1 month old it stopped working, the filter switch was not fully pressed down with the filter in. Now it’s 3 months old and it’s just stopped working all together. Sent it to Dyson and they have told me it needs a new motor and it will cost me £82?? Motor failure is not covered under warranty apparently. I won’t be buying one again that’s for sure

I have just received my hand held vacuum and as you can see it is a scratched up second hand machine with no original box, no manual, one attachment, all wrapped up in bubble wrap. I have requested a refund. This is a rip off.

The DC31 looks very much like a comic laser gun and is pretty uncool but it does the job. It is quite light and well balanced. You need plenty of space to store it and it needs recharging often which makes it less convenient than my old Black and Decker which sat on a wall bracket always quickly to hand. This one has to extracted from a cupboard!
The instructions seem clear but indicate that the charging light is on the cleaner while in fact it is on the plug/transformer.
I am unsure at present if this item is value for money.

Make no mistake, this is a very expensive item, but after having various handheld cordless vacuum cleaners that have been asthmatic at best, this is brilliant. Battery life for me has been longer than expected (though I don’t time it!). It does a great job of getting the dirt out of my car and I find it’s handy to keep around the house for quick emergency clean ups instead of faffing about with the main vacuum cleaner.

I had a particular series of tasks in mind for this product. Unfortunately for me the vacuum only worked for 5 seconds (due to the test charge) and never worked thereafter as the battery refused to charge (the dreaded blinking charge light). Worst still. Dyson, under the terms of their guarantees, are supposed to replace faulty parts. Upon phoning their help line they offered to replace the battery. Alas, two weeks later and still no replacement. I called Dyson and they then claimed not to have the part in stock. In summation. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT as they are made in Malaysia and as a consequence are not tested correctly. Do yourself a favour and buy British.

Excellent piece of kit. Light and easy to handle, does an excellent clean up job. Haven’t found the short battery life a problem when dealing with small clean ups around the house or when used for the car. Not designed to take the place of a ‘normal’ household size cleaner. Expensive but worth it.

THE DYSON DC31 HANDHELD VACUUM IS A STYLISH COMPACT LITTLE ENERGY SAVING DEVICE. IN THE PAST WE WOULD HAVE TO SET UP OUR MAIN VACUUM CLEANER FOR EVERY LITTLE DEPOSIT OF CRUMBS ETC THAT FELL ON THE FLOORS OF OUR HOME, BUT NOW WE JUST LIFT THIS HANDY LITTLE ITEM GIVE A QUICK ZIP OVER THE OFFENDING AREA AND THE JOB IS DONE. FAST AND EFFICIENT. I DO FEEL IT IS A BIT PRICEY FOR THIS TYPE OF ITEM, BUT IT APPEARS ROBUST AND NO PROBLEMS TO DATE. ALSO MORE FREE TIME TO DO OTHER MORE INTERESTING THINGS, LIKE WRITING THIS REVIEW! AMAZON DELIVERED WITH THEIR USUAL PROFFESSIONAL SERVICE.

I thought about buy the DC31 for some time before buying. In fact, it was reviews here on Amazon that finally convinced me.
The first thing I did after unpacking was take it apart. There are several parts and I thought it best to learn how to dismantle it while it was still clean. It is very easy to dismantle. The instructions are basic (mostly pictorial) but adequate. Inside there is a filter that needs removing and washing once a month. It comes with 2 nozzle attachments; a long nozzle for getting in to corners and a wider, general purpose one with a slide forward brush. I also have some attachments for our full-sized Dyson and they fit too so that is very handy too.
I used it for about 1 minute straight out of the box before charging. The battery clips in below the handle and is removable. It can be charged either attached or it can be removed and charged separately. This will be very handy for us as we have a caravan and will want to use it both for that and at home so we will buy an additional battery and charger for the van. Charging first time too about the 3.5 hours specified. The charger is the “plug in” type and is quite small compared to other charger I have seen. The vacuum itself does not fit to the wall either. It is free-standing so you will need somewhere to stand it when charging and storing. I like that aspect of it. This isn’t just another hand-held vacuum.
In use it is light and very balanced making using it for the 6 or 10 minutes of battery life very easy. I was concerned about the battery life but 10 minutes is plenty long enough for most of the jobs you would use this for. One thing is certain… it has a lot of sucking power! So far I haven’t needed the extra power from the 65W button. What is good is that it starts and stops very quickly meaning that you can use it in short “squirts” thereby not wasting battery life. When the battery runs out there is no warning as on other handhelds I have used. On others the motor starts to slow giving you some warning that the battery is about to expire. On this one it is running full power then it just stops. I like that. It means you get the maximum use while it still has power.
Emptying is easy too with a catch releasing the bottom of the collection chamber which then drops down on a hinge releasing the dust down and into the rubbish.
So, in summary, this is a LOT of money to spend on a handheld vacuum and I was reluctant to spend the best part of £140. However, it is worth every penny and it is so easy to use and empty that it will get used a lot more than our last one and I thoroughly recommend it. 5 stars.
