If Amazon had more than 5 stars this product would get them. It is well thought out, engineered, and well made. Simply stated, this vacuum sucks. We have used and owned various “cyclone” style vacuums and none really performed as well as the old tried and true bagged units from the past. Whenever we vacuumed we would have to bend down and pick up pet hair, debris, or small pieces that were within the carpets. I can’t even begin to express my delight in watching the Dyson actually pick up the stuff we are used to manually cleaning.

There are other aspects of this vacuum that exhibit some creative thinking by the Dyson team, who seem to have used vacuums just like the rest of us and got tired of the things that don’t work. There isn’t a button to recline the vacuum to start using it, you just place your toe on a groove and the unit folds – genius! The lower brush mechanism stays on the ground as you lower the handle to sweep under chairs. The hose is in the handle, not flopping around getting stuck on objects. The filters are accessible. Best of all is how easy it is to clear the canister, the debris just fall out.

The DC33 has a bit more power than some of the more expensive ball units. I can’t quite understand Dyson’s marketing and pricing, this one doesn’t have the rotating attachment to go on the end of the hose (not something I’d even use), and no ball. I’ve played with the various units with a ball and wasn’t exactly sold on that concept. I think the more traditional design keeps the sweeper roller on the ground better. The attachments click into their storage compartments. We lost most of the accessories for our previous vac, which used the semi circle tension holders, parts continuously fell out and we got tired of putting them back. The best feature of this is the price. We generally thought of Dyson as being overpriced, yet never tried one. This one is significantly cheaper than others for some reason, but is listed as a current product in 2013. At this price point it is situated squarely in the middle of the pack, but is top notch for performance.

I ordered this last week for a steal at $249.00($299-$50 applying for the Amazon Visa) and I now see the price has gone up $20.00, so I am so glad I ordered when I did! Even at $319, it is still the best price out there for this vacuum new.
Anyway, I had a VAX previously and it was terrible, but I paid close to $300 for it years ago, so I used it for many years while dreaming of someday owning a Dyson. The VAX finally died (never so happy to have something break on me) so I could justify getting a Dyson. I did a lot of research and decided on this one mainly for the price, but also the great reviews. Yes, it does not have a retractable cord which I was used to with the VAX and it does not reach under furniture, but I am certainly not going to give it a bad review for those things! I think I can handle wrapping a cord around a vacuum and I can use the wand to get under the furniture (that is what I have always done anyway).
After having the VAX that I literally had to vacuum the same space 3 times to get it pick up the dirt and then sometimes having it spit it back out, I just wanted a vacuum that did it’s job…VACUUM MY FLOORS! I got it yesterday and of course, had to vacuum my house at 8:00 last night to try it and it is so WONDERFUL! It is light and moves so smoothly and most importantly, it got the dirt and the dog hair the first time! OH…I almost forgot the cord! The cord is awesome! It is SO long! I LOVE not having to stop and unplug it to go into another room! Granted, I cannot vacuum my entire house from one outlet, but I can get all the main parts that have the high traffic (mainly where the dogs go), so that’s all that matters when I am just doing a quick vacuum job. We do not have any carpet in our house…it is all wood, laminate and tile, so I was a bit concerned that it might not work as well, but it works wonderfully. I highly recommend the Dyson DC33.

Both of my brothers have a Dyson vacuum and have told me how awesome they are. We’ve had a Bissel bag-less vac for the last 8 years and over the past few months, I’ve noticed how poorly it has started performing. So instead of searching for a replacement in the $200 range, we decided to invest in the best and purchase a Dyson.

I could not be more impressed with how powerful this vac is. The old Bissel picked up a noticeable amount of dirt. The Dyson, however picks up almost double the amount, based on how full the dirt bin is. We own two dogs (Boston Terrier and Pug) and the amount of hair that was picked up in two bedrooms and a hallway was tremendous. Although our carpet needs a good shampooing, it looks noticeably cleaner with just one run with the Dyson.

Our home is two stories with laminate floors at the bottom. The Dyson does a great job with this too. Typically, I would vacuum the floor before mopping it. With my old vac, there were still traces of dog hair, no matter how thorough I think I was. They Dyson seems to have picked up a lot more, resulting in far less dog hair when I get down to the mopping. Also, our Bissel had a shorter power cord; I couldn’t do the entire living and dining room without having to unplug. The Dyson cord is longer and I don’t have to unplug more than once per floor.

I only have two minor complaints. The first is that you have to push down on the front of the vac in order to tilt the machine when you use it. I’m so used to stepping on a “trigger” in the back so this is a minor inconvenience. Secondly, the hose and attachment is a bit clunky for my taste. I’ve read that the hose needs time to “break-in” so that might be the issue but it does seem a bit unwieldy when doing stairs. Still, the powerful suction on the attachments more than make up for it.

With a five year warranty and no filters to replace, I think that the Dyson will be an overall great value. If you have more than a one bedroom place, I’d highly recommend purchasing it. It makes cleaning so much easier and more efficient. It is quite expensive (more than three times the cost of a Hoover, Eureka, etc.) but in my opinion it will be well worth it. Considering I vacuum at least once a week, over the course of five years that’s over 250 times I’ll be cleaning better.

I wanted a DYSON for 5 years and now I am so disappointed that I waited that long for this piece of junk.

Why do I hate this expensive machine…
    1. I have owned it for 3 months and the canister button does not work. I need to use a screwdriver to open it to dispose of waste.
    2. The wand is useless and can’t be used for stairs or corners or dusting. Way too cumbersome compared to my old hoover. (Not to mention, if you have a quick pick-up job for the wand, you have to unravel the entire cord to get to the wand, since the cord locks the wand in place. Then you have to wind the cord up again.)
    3. Every couple of weeks my machine has screeched to a halt because has been clogged with hair. The roller does not have a self cleaning feature like some of the other models. (It gets jammed under the roller.) With my old hoover I owned it for 13 years and I only had to clean the roller about once every 2 years.

We don’t have any pets in the house so this would never work for a pet owner.

    4. My roller stopped working yesterday altogether, but there was no hair in it. (Very touchy machine.) I let it cool off for a while since I could smell something burning and then it started to work OK again. I think something is jammed is inside the machine.

My old monster hoover never went to the shop and still runs. This one has two repairs that need to be made and it is only 3 months old.

My only pro: This machine can suck like crazy. It can even get up small glitter dust off the carpet, but since it is so dysfunctional in other ways I can’t stand it. Any machine that requires I have two vacuums doesn’t work for me.

My goal: sell this on craigslist for $200 and take a $200 loss and go buy a new hoover. 🙁

TRY THE WAND FEATURE BEFORE YOU BUY THIS MACHINE.
    SOOOOO POORLY DESIGNED!

I hardly ever write reviews but will not purchase anything greater than $100 without looking at reviews, mostly on Amazon. I’m writing this as the DC33 didn’t have a lot of reviews for my type of usage. I also wanted to state that I had a grinding noise that wasn’t referenced a lot in the Amazon reviews but was prevalent when I searched for this issue.

First, I am thoroughly enjoying my DC33. It’s exactly what I needed for my house that has mostly solid surface flooring. Living in California, we attract dust balls and no matter how often you clean, you will find dust balls throughout your house. Also, I don’t have pets but a wife with very long hair that somehow seems to find its way on the floors of our house. Lastly, the DC33 replaced an Electrolux battery powered vacuum stick that worked well for over three years but did lose suction power that we hardly ever used it.

The DC33 has picked up a lot of dust even though we cannot see the dust. It’s easy to use and I personally don’t mind having to plug it in so that I get the most suction power possible. I agree that the one issue is the attachments but could not understand what people were writing about in their reviews. Let me try and see if I can explain it. The attachment tool is a bit clumsy as when you use it, it pulls the vacuum with it. Picture trying to vacuum your couch and when you stretch the tool, you feel the vacuum come with it. Not sure how I’d fix it but just wanted people to understand the issue. The good news is that I used the DC33 to vacuum my couch and it worked like a charm. I didn’t even think about this as an option when purchasing the DC33 so I’m pleasantly surprised.

So far, I’ve used the DC33 about six times and can’t complain except for one issue: the grinding noise. When I first turned it on and was vacuuming an area rug, the DC33 let out a loud grinding noise; I thought I broke it. I kept vacuuming and the noise would occasionally occur but only when I was vacuuming the area rugs. I found out that for low-ply carpeting, the suction power is too strong and is actually sucking up the rug causing the noise. I called customer service and by taking out a rubber strip from the beater bar (bottom of the vacuum for those like me that didn’t know what this was) and the noise has mostly gone away. I have had the noise once or twice but I also know it’s not destroying the DC33 so I’m OK.

Overall, I gave it a four star rating due to the clumsy attachment situation. Don’t get me wrong, the attachments are so much better than my older vacuums as the suction power is very strong, it’s just clumsy.
