We bought this to replace a 7 year old animal Dyson. This is far better at moving between surfaces, it fills its drum (comparable size) faster which I am taking to mean it gathers more dust/fluff and it is very easy to guide about the floor. I don’t find it heavy, I know some people do. Fringe benefit this past winter, it puts out a nice amount of heat as it goes along, not like a blow heater but you can feel it 🙂
March 2017, I have downgraded my review and opinion of this a lot. It is now five years old and the only reason we still have it is because we can’t afford to replace it yet. It has required a new ball as the first broke in two after about a year and a half, although Dyson warranty covered that, suction is no where near as good as it used to be and washing filters makes no difference, neither does changing them. The upright locking mechanism….doesn’t, if you raise handle to upright position and hear it click then let go it usually falls back down again. The self adjusting head….doesn’t, it’s been stuck on a low level for a couple years with many broken bits of plastic, it can still be used on carpet but not on wooden or tiled floors as it “limpets” onto the surface. The red bit at the end of the wand is broken, very neatly, it comes off the hose so none of the attachments can be used without the end falling off. Almost every time I lift it to carry it up the stairs the cylinder falls off, there is so much flex in the handle that the catch comes apart. The button to open the cylinder is so flimsy it requires several goes to get the thing to open to be emptied. I know it’s five years old and I don’t expect products to last forever, some wear and tear is to be expected but this is very poor.

This vacuum is brilliant. I have had a Dyson DC03 for over 15 years but sadly time and usage has taken it’s toll and it started to fail, especially when my husband dropped it down the stairs, so I decided it was time for a new one. We have a cat and a dog – the dog sheds twice a year and the hair is very hard to clear up. This vacuum does it so easily – much better than my previous Dyson. In fact it’s so powerful that it takes me half the time to clean the house and because the dust storage compartment is much larger I don’t need to keep stopping to empty it. I also have the mini-turbine head which is perfect for cleaning the dogs beds, and the other tools are perfect for getting into difficult to reach spaces. The only complaint I would have is that the stretchable hose is just a bit on the taut side which means that if you stretch it from the bottom to the top of the stairs you have to be careful it doesn’t pull you back down again! Sadly it’s just as heavy as my old Dyson but then I suppose you have to expect that if you want a sturdy, reliable upright. I am happy to give this product 5 stars and it certainly is a joy to use.

About 10 years ago I swore never to buy another Dyson. Just over a week ago I took delivery of this model and can’t stop hoovering! I was quite apprehensive having read the negative reviews but all those have only served to help me use this Hoover properly. It feels a sturdy machine despite being a little plasticky ,which doesn’t fall over when using the hose unlike my last appliance ( a good German brand) and the extras work well including the attachment for the stairs with 2 strips instead of 1. The ball mechanism is great and it takes very little effort to push around. I have a black Labrador and pale carpets/ floors and this hoover just cleans all those hairs up with ease leaving nothing behind. Yes there are “tram lines” but personally I have no problem with this as the carpet looks well hoovered and they soon disappear. It also hoovers right up against the skirting boards which is good and the suction is amazing. In fact my carpets even look cleaner than they have for a long time. The “bin” is of good capacity and the flex reaches a long way which is great. I really can’t find anything negative to write about the Dyson DC41 Animal and would highly recommend it to anyone in need of a Hoover that now outperforms other appliances on the market with ease! Well done Mr Dyson- this is a brilliant vacuum cleaner!

I have to say this Dyson is great. I originally had a small Dyson which was brilliant but when we moved to a bigger house it was back breaking. I had this Dyson for 6 years and it is still going strong, which is why when I looked into buying an upright it had to be Dyson.
I read the reviews on this product and few a people complained about leaving marks on the carpet, I agree it does but it just shows where you have vacuumed which I do not think is a bad thing. People also complained about the weight saying it was too heavy. Yes it is heavy. However, it is so easy to move around you don’t even notice the weight. I am 5ft’5 and have noodle arms (word of my husband not mine! and I can lift it up and down the stairs no problem. The extension for getting in those hard to reach places is nice a long which is a big plus.
I love the way you empty it, no mess straight into the bin without having to take bits apart. The quality is a bit plastic like but this is just to keep the weight down.
Bottom line is this is a great vacuum cleaner, if you have the money to spend invest in one of these babies you will not be disappointed. If you want something to suck good you will not get better than this unless your wife is as good as me. 🙂
