We have had a Dyson DC31 Animal for a couple of years. We were so pleased with it that when this version, designed for all types of floors, came on the market we didn’t look elsewhere. It does exactly what it says it does, is easy to empty, the filters are washable and the battery life is more than adequate for most vacuuming jobs. It comes into its own when vacuuming the car. Of course, this is not designed to replace the upright, but for skimming round the carpets between main vacuuming, small carpeted areas and hard surfaced floors its ideal. We have a hard floored kitchen, dining and utility area and as another reviewer has stated, you don’t like to see dust balls floating around and its easier to get this out as it is light and quick and whilst being sceptical about the ball arrangement on the head for steering, it works like a dream and is very good. Furthermore, you can take the main attachment off and use it with just the nozzle to whiz around cracks and crevices. One thing we have found is that in the bedroom where longer hair is more prolific the hair gets wrapped round the brush bar much more so than it would with the large Dyson upright. Having said that, we have had a DCO1 (built like a battleship!) since 1995 and then acquired the Dyson DC31, consequently our experiences with the Dysons have all been totally positive. This product is no exception. As a techy engineer type though, I would state that because the Dyson is an engineered product you do need to follow the instructions with regards to operation and maintenance if you wish to obtain continued optimum performance from the product. On several occasions I have had to sort out friends’ Dyson machines and the majority of the issues revolve around the fact that they have not followed the instructions and the machine has become blocked or partially blocked because of a lack of adhering to these principles. For example, blocked filters – failure to periodically clean out the brush bars and any other areas where the instructions tell you to clear out the fluff and rubbish that may accumulate. None of this requires a service engineer, as the instructions are simple to follow and you can refer to the Dyson web site which has plenty of information. Another real plus is that you can also phone Dyson Customer Care freephone, in this country, and speak to a human being!

Now that I’m in my late twenties I think it’s possibly okay to start reviewing things like Dyson’s on Amazon – so that I will. I love this thing. Me and the bf bought this as we have two very long-haired cats who leave tiny clumps of fur EVERYWHERE – and we were getting fed up of dragging out our huge vacuum to clean it up every other day. This vacuum has completely revolutionised our ability to deal with cat fur and them traipsing tiny bits of cat litter about, as well as the tiny bits of cardboard they shred from their scratchymajig – it’s properly great.
The vacuum itself, even with the long attachment, is really light-weight and very well-balanced – I had a hand operation a couple of years ago which means my grip isn’t as strong as it used to be, but I have absolutely no issue with holding this. Saying that, you can only use it for 13 minutes at a time, but I’ve never wanted to hoover for longer then that anyway, and the Digital Slim is really efficient. We had ummed and ahhed over getting the “animal” version, but this one is perfectly fine for our uses, and my mum has also recently bought the same model with a similarly furry cat in residence, and it’s been good for her too.
We haven’t used the “docking” station as we don’t have anywhere to install it, but the hoover itself takes up barely any room in the house, and just sits down the side of the sofa, ready to be used whenever. The charging takes a little while, but it’s not a big inconvenience – it definitely outweighs having to unpack and pack away a huge clunky cleaner instead.
One of the best things about it is how easy it is to hoover the stairs – no more precariously balancing a hoover on each step as you work your way up, or moving the whole hoover upstairs once you get half way up – you just use it as you go, working your way through the house.
Another great thing is the ability to remove the rotating hair brush part from the motorised head (I have no idea what this is technically called, but it’s the bit that normally gets stuck full of fur and long girly hair). You just pop a coin in the side, twist and you can pull it out, defluff it and put it back in. This means that it stays completely efficient and always removes hair and everything else from our carpets effectively. There is a max setting which ramps up the power a bit (although shortens the time you can use it) which works really well when needed – you just press a tiny button on the handle. It’s really easy to empty, there’s a little catch on the side so we just empty it straight into the wheely bin. It holds a decent amount in it too.
The different attachments are good, the nozzle is a decent size and it’s all very comfortable to hold. The only slight sticking point (which other people have mentioned) is that the battery sometimes falls out when you’re using it – there’s nothing to really lock it in position. This isn’t a huge issue, and certainly doesn’t outweigh everything else, although it is something I’m surprised that Dyson haven’t looked over yet.
Overall, we really do adore this vacuum and couldn’t believe we’d spent like £200 on something so grown up, but it has been a total time-saver and is just so incredibly convenient that we can’t imagine life without it now. Can’t recommend highly enough.

I loved this machine when i first got it. It was lightweight and powerful. The battery life was not great but I was aware of that before I bought it and it was long enough to quickly whizz round to spruce up before last minute guests arrived! I recommended it to everyone.
After few months things were less great. When using the power came on and off intermittantly. I assumed that it was because of a blockage but in spite of cleaning every possible component several times it made no differrence.
Amazon customer services were brilliant (unlike Dyson which were woeful and sent out the wrong part) and replaced my machine.
I worked fine and I was in love again.
Fast forward 10 months and the same problem has started. I was so dissapointed-this is not a cheap machine. Looking online it appears that this is a problem other people have had too.

I bought this lighweight vac because i suffer from arthritis but I still wanted to have a clean house. It is excellent for a quick whizz round. I still get my big vac out but only about once a month for a thorough clean. It appears to be quite sturdy, emptying is simple and removing the filter for cleaning could not be easier. One criticism I have is that when I am trying to empty it I always turn it on because the handle incorporates the start lever. I had reason to contact Dyson because the charger was overheating and I was treated very badly and rudely by them. Needless to say I will not be buying anything else made by Dyson as their customer care is less than caring. They did replace the charger after an inquisition akin to the Spanish inquisitors..I had the impression they could not believe a customer would have the nerve to complain about one of their products. I bought this vac from Amazon and it was much cheaper than from other sources.
