I have a long, wide hedge (40 ft long, 5 to 6 ft wide and a theoretical height of 8 ft that had grown several feet higher whilst we continually decided not to cut it due to nesting birds throughout the summer) and cutting it flat on the top is never easy. This device is a game changer but needs strong arms and shoulders. In the end, I saved some effort by digging out an old tool belt with various pouches on it, putting it tightly round my waist and sitting the bottom of the pole in one of the pouches to hold some of the weight. This means my hands/arms/shoulders are mostly free to guide the pole trimmer rather than having to support it. It works for me, and helped get me successfully through a heavy afternoon of work.
The extra cutting power from having a mains operated unit, rather than a battery powered one, is definitely welcome.
All in all, I am very happy with my purchase.

Dommage.

This is an ok machine, not very powerful and rather heavy to use for more than a couple of minutes at a time at arms leangth. ok for trimming an already trained hedge, the trimming head is not very well made with cheap materials and I can’t see it lasting very long even with accational use.

A great piece of kit capable of cutting through some very thick hedges. I’d been looking for an extending hedge trimmer for a while and decided to stick to a name I knew, and I’m glad I did. It can cut through very thick branches with ease and can has a very long reach getting to the bits of hedge normally out of reach.
As other reviews state, it isn’t light! But the you have to expect this as it has a powerful motor mounted on the end. I’d say it was comparable to my standard size petrol hedge trimmer.
As I have a lot of hedge to cut I decided against the battery version as I’d be forever recharging the batteries.
I’d recommend this trimmer for anyone with large and tall hedges as you can adjust the angle of the head allowing 90 degree cuts whilst staying on the ground. No need for ladders.

I bought this trimmer a year ago and it worked fine for the 10 or 12 times I used it. It’s a bit unwieldy when it’s extended but not too heavy.
My issue is that after storing the trimmer in it’s box in a dry shed over winter and keeping the battery indoors the trimmer is completely dead and 2 weeks out of warranty. It looks like the battery has died, it doesnt light up to show its charge. Looking online apparently this is a very common problem with Flymo batteries and a replacement is £69!
I wouldn’t recommend this trimmer because of the appalling battery lifespan.

I’m somewhat comparing this to my (not telescopic) cordless Makita trimmers, which are generally very, very good, albeit more expensive. These Flymos aren’t as powerful, so don’t chew through thicker stems or volume of stems quite as well. Maybe I’ve been spoiled, but it’s annoying when you’re at your maximum reach and the trimmers don’t really cut the hedge terribly well.
The cutting length is also quite short, so “just running it over the top of the hedge” won’t actually cut all of it (you’ll need another run from the other side, and maybe some tidy ups to get it all). Somewhat due to the nature of telescopic trimmers, the weight is quite hard to manage, although I didn’t find this too heavy, it does get a bit much after a while. The weight isn’t balanced, so you’re constantly having to hold them up (again, somewhat the nature of the beast), but as I say, gets a bit tiresome.
In use, there aren’t too many interlocks, so it’s easy to get going pretty quickly. The height and angle adjustments are easy enough to use too. I think I’d prefer a sort of clip for the height adjuster rather than a sort of twist to hold, but it’s fine either way. Getting the battery on and off is easy, and the blades have a decent plastic cover.
The battery takes hours to charge fully, so if you’ve just bought it, or used it all, then put the battery on charge, tidy up the trimmings, have lunch, possibly take the trimmings to the dump and then come back for a bit more. A ‘quick half hour’ charge will give you a few extra minutes if you’re close to finishing though. The trimmers slow down a bit as the battery gets close to empty, so it gives you some warning of your impending break time (contrast to the Makitas that somehow keep going and then then just stop completely – but only take 20-30 minutes to charge fully). The battery charger is basically a ‘wall wart’ with a cable, so it’s about as cheap as they come, so I wasn’t expecting much ‘fast charge’ capability.
All in all, they’re not going to be the only trimmers you’ll want to use around your garden, but they are very competent, especially for the price.
