The computer fails every time it gets to location input. Once you have had a mac – never go back! Have taken it to a local tech to see what he can offer. Simply wanted a device for teams meetings.

I like the weight and slimness of this laptop, it looks good and is good value for money

Be very, very careful to follow the Lenovo ( not windows) set up instructions. I did’nt and ended up with a ‘brick’ that was the result of the pre-installed Bitlocker kicking-in, just after the first set of ‘ordinary’ windows updates. The PC had functioned well the previous evening and disaster struck the following morning. I had failed to see a vital password and write it down, during set-up. It was the final part of the Bitlocker password, which was needed to open the system and continue. Not a computer fault: a security feature that cannot be accessed by average computer Geek. This was my error. Buyer beware. The PC is now functioning well, in the hands of a technician friend, who has sorted the situation and now owns it (as a gift). He likes the inexpensive Laptop.

Ignore the name: R3 4GB 128GB does in fact have 8GB.
When my mum’s old Chromebook unalived itself, I wanted to find her something simple yet powerful enough for her admittedly basic needs – essentially just using a web browser and occasionally printing something off. The Lenovo IdeaPad 1 turned out to be the perfect fit.
First off, it’s lightweight and compact (just 1.58kg and 17.9mm thick), which is ideal for someone like my mum who basically uses a laptop like a tablet, seriously, you should see her using a laptop… it’s lightweight, looks modern and suits her needs – no ethernet jack! Which certainly ensures its thinness. The 15-inch Full HD display is sharp and plenty bright indoors, though 220 nits struggles in direct sunlight. The anti-glare finish, however, helps reduce eye strain, which is a big plus, it’s perfectly suitable for its basic use case.
First thing I did was reinstall a bloat-free version of Windows 11. I ditched S Mode. Honestly, it’s vital if you want the freedom to install proper programs, apps can bore off. I initially got it down to just 89 processes in Task Manager, and streamlined everything to function almost like a Chromebook but on Windows.
The result? A simple, snappy, and familiar user experience tailored to her needs.
The AMD Ryzen 3 7320U and 8GB of RAM are surprisingly capable for this price range. While 8GB might seem modest by today’s standards, it’s more than enough for my mum’s daily task which is basically just browsing the net, occasional video calls and the occasional YouTube deep dive. The CPU handles multitasking smoothly, and the Radeon 610M graphics add just enough oomph for light media consumption. The storage is just 128GB but again this is fine for my mum.
The keyboard is comfortable to type on, but I feel the inclusion of the numpad is really not needed, another model may omit it but I don’t know, I personally find it a bit cramped. The Enter key is not full size, it combines with the | \ key. Does have media keys which is nice, a Function Lock feature too.
A camera privacy shutter gives the Boomer peace of mind. Connectivity options are solid too, with USB-C, USB-A, and even a card reader. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi 5 ensure she stays connected without issue. The Dolby Atmos-optimised speakers are surprisingly decent for this price point, delivering clear audio for her video calls and YouTube.
I also really like the Lift Lid option, I’m personally not into laptops much these days but it has a cool feature where it turns on when you lift the lid which I found pretty nifty.
This Lenovo IdeaPad 1 has become the best system my mum has ever had, and it’s a joy to see how seamlessly it suits her. It’s simple enough not to overwhelm her but robust enough to handle anything she throws at it. Although to be honest much of that is probably due to my tinkering, I really wanted to get the most out of that 8GB RAM and the modest CPU.
If you’re looking for an affordable yet capable laptop for a parent or student, this one hits all the right notes – especially if you’re willing to tweak it for a more optimised experience.

This is an improvement on my previous one.

This laptop is outstanding for the price. The quality is excellent, with Windows 10 until 2025, Windows 11 easily can be installed thereafter. It comes with a free year of Microsoft 365, and all the normal features. Easy to set up, full HD and with a good processor, I would unequivocally recommend this laptop to anyone, particularly for school work or as a spare laptop for Authors or anyone that needs to work on the go. Absolutely outstanding buy!

Not up to operating more than one thing at a time. Would definitely not buy if you multitask

Its a great laptop for the price, was £100 cheaper when purchased from Amazon, hard drive is 128gb and upgraded to 1tb, which was cheaper than buying a laptop with the additional storage. Boots up quickly and although it has 8gb of ram, its more than enough for daily tasks. If you want to play games then may need to get more ram. Otherwise its a great computer. In terms of battery usage, this is a little exaggerated, though get about five hours with full charge and it charges quickly.
