Give me an excuse to buy a new One+ and I will. I don’t need much of a reason, any tenuous one will do!
I continue to add to the collection because I’ve never had a bad tool from Ryobi. And this hedge trimmer is no exception.
Having planted a couple of bamboos in pots over the last few years, the time had come where it wasn’t possible to leave them unchecked any longer. So what’s a guy to do? He can painstakingly trim using the tools he has, or go another step in with One+.
As you’d expect the trimmer is easy to use – press the button and with a simple scything motion the unwanted offshoots go bye bye. In a matter of mere moments, what was once an unkempt mess of a bamboo suddenly looks worthy a place in a well respected garden. I’m sure if you’re talented you could easily create a topiary masterpiece with this tool, but in my novice hands a simple rounding off was the best outcome possible.
The Ryobi trimmer is fairly lightweight but I imagine you could get tired using for long periods of time. The blades cut with absolute ease even through some slightly tougher branches on some of my other bushes. I’ve been using with a 5Ah battery as anything less would likely see diminishing results quite quickly and with that battery installed I’ve run out of bushes and hedges to trim before the battery has died or there has been any impact to performance of the trimmer.
A great buy and worthy addition to my One+ collection.

The Ryobi OHT1845 ONE+ cordless hedge trimmer was bought as a single item for use with my existing RC18120 compact charger and RB18L40 4Ah battery.
The blades are sharp with a good, efficient profile; and thus cut very well, leaving clean edges on leaves and stems, without any torn or stripped stalks.
The handles could be more ergonomic. I needed to use thinner, grippier gloves than normal to manage the tool for all the fiddly angles of topiary, mainly because it is more difficult to gain a repeatable grip on the front loop handle than with my ancient (forty-five years old) mains-powered B&D trimmer with its smaller squarer thicker loop.
It does not allow one to vary the power, but it is only just powerful enough anyway, and a lower power would never be used. On/Off is sufficient and safe, requiring both hands to operate both switches simultaneously, one on each handle.
It is excellent at trimming small and sappy green items such as my yew topiary, but struggles with heavier denser wood such as pyracantha. However, even my theoretically beefier old trimmer struggles on pyracantha.
The OHT1845 weighs 2.45kg and with a 0.725kg 4Ah battery mounted for a total of 3.175kg the balance on the forward handle is about right. However, in use it FEELS quite a lot heavier than my old trimmer, although that weighs almost the same at 2.9kg. I think this is entirely down to the shape of the front loop, with the old trimmer being more ergonomic.
The 4Ah battery was happy to reduce a whole yew ball back to its two-metre diameter, and judging by how soon it was fully recharged, could have done a few more similar balls. But my arms could not, because this trimmer feels that much heavier.

Great for quick cuts in particular as no wires or firing up. Very effective even with thickish branches and light in weight. Overall very pleased and good value for money.

Bought may 2025 paid £79.49 Excellent piece of kit. Used several times. Ok for me but some might find it heavy. I did use the ryobi 4A battery. Gives plenty of power and duration. Recommended

Does the job for me perfectly as I have mostly shrub like trees or bushes. It’s powerful enough to cut through decent sized stems effortlessly. During operation I use it intermittently, not triggering for long periods to avoid the motor from overheating. The battery longevity is excellent using the 18v 2.5ah which was very surprising, easy to handle as it is reasonably light weight, cuts with ease, good design that feels somewhat robust not cheaply made.
Would I recommend, yes – Perfect if you already have Ryobi tools, and some shrubs!
