I love these Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones.
My usual music is Classical — so that goes from Opera to Orchestral to Chamber music with some contemporary stuff now and then.
Going on for just under a year now, almost daily use, been on a few long distance flights…
These are super comfortable. The ear cushions are soft and hug around my ears and excludes sound even without ANC to a large degree.
Sound quality for my tastes are as good as I can hear. I am no Audiophile and I do not scrutinise recordings… I just enjoy being enveloped by a far more than just good audio experience. The Sonys definitely deliver.
Call quality is so-so. But honestly, that’s not why I buy headphones. Battery life is beyond expectations.
The case is very handy and stops the headphones getting bashed about when in my satchel or backpack.
The ANC cut out background noise very well — obviously not everything — some sounds do get through, but the real test comes when you’ve been in town walking about listening to music in almost complete silence, and then you take them off! Shocking how loud our urban environments are!
I love these Sonys. Hope to get a few more years’ use from them.
The one thing that really is an oversight on Sony’s part is the Voice Notifications! It drives me nuts. “Bluetooth device 1 connected!” “Bluetooth device 2 connected!” “Bluetooth device 1 disconnected!” Aaaargh!
And there is no way to switch them off…
But I’ll take this sound quality with that relatively minor annoyance anytime.

All the reviews recommended these, and I did have an older model which I wore loads for over six years! I love the new feature of being able to connect to two devices. Great design, I can wear them for hours and they don’t give me ear burn! Easy controls and love the navy colour!

It’s hard to believe but these WH-1000XM4 headphones have been on sale for about five years now. There are now two models newer than this, imaginatively named the XM5 and the XM6 both of which offer improvements on this XM4 model. But these XM4s are amazing quality and at the moment about half the price of the newest XM6 model.
The active noise cancelling of the XM4 headphones is very good. I often travel on the train with these and they are great at deadening the outside noise of the train (and are especially good at quietening diesel trains!). But they also significantly quieten those annoying travellers who have to share their music, loud comedy clips and telephone calls with everybody else! It keeps you sane when travelling and allows you to listen to your music or movies in great quality.
I am particularly impressed with their bass capabilities which underpin a great depth and richness of sound.
These headphones can be managed through Sony’s Sound Connect app which gives you quite a degree of control over the various features of the XM4s, in particular the ability to change the noise management according to the environment.
The battery life of the XM4s is very good, stated in the literature at about 30 hours which seems about right to me.
The call quality of these headphones is good, both in terms of the pickup from the microphone and the audibility of the caller in noisy environments. I understand that the XM5 and XM6 both have superior microphone and noise cancelling but this obviously comes at a greater cost than the XM4 which I find very much suits my needs.
There are many technical explanations of the attributes and differences between these various models on the internet and it is clear from those that the latest XM6 model is technically improved in various ways.
But if you are on a budget, as I was when I bought these, I think that the XM4 headphones are fantastically good value for money. I’m really pleased with them and give them top marks.
If you want to get a pair, now would be a good time as it’s hard to imagine that they will be around for very much longer when there are two newer models available.

Un casque avec une qualité de son impressionnante, basses, aiguë medium tout y est. Englobe les oreilles léger et super confortable, reduction de bruit hallucinant ,super beau ( donne envie d’être regardé comme une belle voiture ou un bijou). Je recommande. J’ai récupéré mon colis dans un salle état, le carton Amazon complètement détérioré heureusement que la boîte du casque sony était impeccable. Amazon pouvez vous remédier à ça, cela arrive trop souvent à moi et d’autres. Merci.

I have a pair of Beats Studio 3, and I the noise cancelling on the Sony XM4 are far superior. I think I the overall sound quality is better.
The battery life is brilliant and functions are great. Admittedly I only use this for my gym workouts hence why I was keen on something with great active noise cancelling.
Quality of life things are done very well with this. Such as automatic Bluetooth connectivity when powered on. The auto switch off function, and the app. Would highly recommend!
My partner has the XM5 and honestly I couldn’t tell the difference in terms of sound quality. The XM5 in my opinion look cooler, but functionally they are the same. So if price isn’t an issue for you, get the XM5… otherwise stick with these bad boys.
