Saw this bag at the airport a few weeks ago, and were very impressed with the quality and appearance – the leather trim really makes it stylish, especially in the Navy Blue color. We have had several pieces of the Travelpro Maxlite Softside line, and love them all. The Platinum Elite Line is a step up in quality, and still reasonably priced compared to other brands. It is slightly heavier than the Maxlite line. Now we are trying to decide whether to upgrade our other pieces! I noticed that this 16″ Underseat Spinner is not shown on the Travelpro website, so it may have been discontinued – order it while you can! It is definitely a genuine Travelpro, not a knock off.

I’ve now used this bag for two trips, so I know it fairly well at this point.

In my opinion, the ‘weakest link’ in any rolling luggage is the wheels. It’s therefore the most important issue when shopping for rolling luggage. Unless the wheels and axles are well designed and constructed for durability, they will be what fails first. My cheapo 6-7 year old 2-wheeler from a chain store developed wobbly wheels last time I used it indicating imminent failure.

I chose this Travelpro case based on rave reviews and what looked like a very durable wheel system. When it arrived, the first thing I looked at was the wheels. Having ‘dualies’ helps distribute the weight as well as divides individual axle loads, thereby increasing life span. I think if one wheel or axle breaks, the other wheel of the ‘dualie’ will continue to work fine. What’s more interesting is that each wheel assembly is attached to what looks like an easily replaceable plastic mounting ‘plate’ should a wheel or rolling problem every arise.

I rate this case as outstanding in almost all categories. Of course, the wheel system is tops! Being able to roll it sideways in a straight line works very well, too. I’m not sure if it’s magnets or some kind of hidden detents in the swivel mechanism that keeps them straight, but they work well. Overall, the construction is what can only be described as ‘beefy’ and should be able to withstand the ‘savage baggage handlers’ of TV commercials 30 years ago. But I didn’t buy this bag to check it at the counter. I have no doubt whatsoever this will be the last bag of this size I will ever buy.

The fabric it’s made of is thicker and seems more durable than that of the cheapo bag it replaces. The zippers are also beefy. The interior is surprisingly roomy, and the included 2-fold garment bag a works surprisingly well, too. Having handles top, bottom, and on one side makes it easily carry-able in any orientation. Being able to slide my 17″ laptop in the outside front pocket was what clinched the deal for me.

I have only a couple of ‘nit picks’ about the case. First is the too-small zippered pocket directly behind the laptop pocket. I managed to get perhaps 10 folded sheets of 8.5″x11″ paper in there after the bag was packed and the laptop zippered in. Perhaps that’s its intent, to hold a minimal amount of paperwork, such as tickets. My only other nit-pick is that the expansion gusset is only from the bottom of the case almost to the top of the front section, where the gusset goes to zero. So if you’re forced to pack it really full, put the excess at the bottom. I also have zero use for the USB cell phone recharge capability & battery compartment, but I’m sure some users will be happy to have it.

Should I need additional rolling luggage, Travelpro will definitely be the first, and probably last brand I look at. I’ve already recommended the brand to a couple of friends, too!
