I run my own small part-time gardening business and have spent months researching extendable hedge trimmers. I have several hedges to trim four or five times a year of various heights and thicknesses. I did not want to get into ladder work so needed to look for something else. I’m one of those annoying people who will read every review they can get their hands on and trawl the internet, watch YouTube reviews and visit garden centres. I also did not want to rely on a power cable as sometimes my customers are out and aren’t able to give me access to a plug. That meant either a petrol trimmer or cordless. Unless you are going for one of the higher-price brands the petrol variants were not viable (too many poor reviews on the cheaper models).
I looked at as many cordless extending trimmers as possible knowing I wanted power, longest reach and lightness of use. The VonHauss seemed to fit the bill.
So to the trimmer itself … when you remove it from the box for the first time lay all the parts out on a clean flat surface and familiarise yourself. Firstly take some time positioning the shoulder strap holder and the front hand guard. Both can moved to various locations so move them around. Put the shoulder strap over you head and arm and adjust the length until comfortable. You can then practice putting the bottom section on and off the strap until it feels right. Before you attach the cutting head remember to remove the small plastic cup protecting the electrical connectors. The head then slides easily on and off the main unit. Take the base unit off the strap and lay on the floor before connecting the cutting head. I would suggest then balancing the cutting end on bin or low fence whilst you connect it back onto the shoulder strap. Practice a few times so that when it comes to adjusting the angle of the cutting head or extending the pole you are well versed in taking the whole machine on and off the clip. It takes some getting used to managing the cutter at full extension but after a while you do get used to it. The secret is to get the strap to take as much of the weight as possible so your hands and arms are just guiding the cutting edge.
The VonHaus seems powerful enough and the battery works well – long lasting and charges in an hour. I bought a second battery as recommended in other reviews as a backup (good idea). The blades cut well and the machine feels extremely well built. The colours are a bit garish but that stops you from tripping over it whilst it is on the floor. The only negatives for me are the dead-mans trigger which can hurt the wrist after a while and getting the whole machine as comfortable as possible whilst extended. I may look at buying am additional three point harness to even out the load. I am 52, 5’10” and would class myself as having a good fitness level.
By the way – I bought this machine myself – I’m certainly not sponsored by VonHaus.
Will update the review in six months time after the spring & summer season.

! HONEST REVIEW!
Brought this to cut a high hedge at the back of my summer house, it came fully charged and was simple set up.
We used it for two hours and it performed extremely well without an issue. Blades are super sharp and product was extremely sturdy.
Only issue is that the product is heavy and the strap doesn’t work very well! Would recommend buying a separate holder for ease.

Success in dealing with huge overgrowth hedge facing our house
Useful charged by battery , extends well good reach , good to charge for an hour (then rest in that time) such a big hedge was hard to do
Cut thicker branches after a full charge, can get stuck on them though
I Cut an 8ft hedge overgrowth, pleased with length of cutter but still heavy,I’m 6ft and 20 stones , my wife couldn’t use extended and for only short time as shorter length , took 4 hours over 2 days with assistance picking up leaves etc
Not great power but would be fine just maintaining hedges not such massive overgrowth

I have used this once since my recent purchase and it did the job admirally.
Easy to use.
If I had a negative comment to make; it would have to be the charger. Very important, but cheaply made. Shame it lets the product down.

Unfortunately, my order was apparently “lost in transit” by the carrier, Hermes although how you can lose a package that’s 4ft long and 6″ x 6″ I have no idea.
I contacted Von Haus through Amazon, who arranged a replacement to be delivered by independent courier and it arrived the next day so excellent customer service!
As it hasn’t stopped raining since receiving it so I haven’t been able to use it in the garden but I have put it together in the house and it seems a very good product.
The weight isn’t too bad and balance, particularly with the supplied shoulder strap, seems good.
The battery and charger are compact in size and the battery arrived in full charge state.
The plastic blade guard is flimsy and isn’t easy to put back on the blade but then I suppose this helps to keep the price down.
Overall, pleased with my purchase but especially with the Von Haus customer service.
UPDATE: Used the trimmer for the first time on the hedgerow at the bottom of my garden which is a mixture of conifer, pyracantha etc an about 8ft high.
This is a good trimmer for domestic garden use but I wouldn’t recommend for commercial.
Initially the trimmer didn’t seem as powerful as I thought it might be but it coped admirably.
I found it easy to adjust the length and the shoulder strap enabled me to balance it.
All these things have some weight to them especially when extended but this was one of the lighter ones I’ve tried.
I’m 70 and 12st and after about half an hour I found my arms getting tired and starting to ache so I stopped. I had done as much as I had intended though and there were still 2 bars of battery left of the 3 I started with.
Last year I got someone in to trim this hedge at a cost of £200 so as long as I keep my health I think this will prove a good buy!
One minor negative: the nut came off the bolt that holds the shoulder strap and is lost in the hedgerow somewhere. I found a replacement in my box of bits but I probably should have checked it was tight before starting the job!
Overall, pleased with my purchase.

Yes it does the job but I found it difficult to use because of the weight.
Paul Robards –
Yes it’s heavy but well made, thing release leavers a bit weak so hop will last life of unit.value for money is excellent but high hedges you’ll need to rest your arms a bit.durability it’s early days but hopefully will last.battery small but does job maybe worth getting a spare .ill give that some thought.considered a Bosch but doesn’t come with battery or charger and expensive to buy.personally feel made a good choice.
